The igloo – a masterpiece of thermal engineering

The igloo – a masterpiece of thermal engineering

Energy efficiency is not a new invention. For thousands of years, it has been vital to survival for the inhabitants of the polar region. The igloos in which they live are masterpieces of thermal engineering.

Inside these domed structures built of 30-cm-thick snow blocks, the temperature is up to 50°C warmer than outside. If the outside temperature is -46°C, the inside temperature may reach
-6°C at ground level and as much as +4°C at shoulder height. Warm conditions for Arctic residents!

On the one hand, this is because the snow offers excellent heat insulation. Another reason is the tunnel-shaped entrance area, which is also slightly deepened. First, the cold air from outside moves downwards into the recess, while the interior is heated by the light sources and the occupants' body heat.
