LON (Local Operating Network) is a field bus which is used ideally in room automation. It permits the exchange of information between equipment made by different manufacturers, regardless of the type of application.
LON technology has been adopted as a European standard (EN14908).
LON field bus systems are employed in systems with flat hierarchical structures. With LON, the devices communicate with each other via a bus. This concept contrasts with hierarchically-orientated systems in which a parent computer collects all data.
